“The unresolved legacy of the year 1989”

9th Annual Seminar of the China-Zentrum

This year’s seminar is composed of two parts:

15h00 – Lecture and podium discussion on the topic: “The unresolved legacy of the year 1989”.

Dr. Astrid Lipinsky (Institute for East Asian Studies / Sinology, University of Vienna) will speak about the “Mothers of Tian’anmen”, an organization of the relatives of the victims of the massacre at Tian’anmen Square in Beijing on 4th June 1989.

Taking part in the panel discussion are:

  • Former Ambassador Dr. Hannspeter Hellbeck, Wachtberg (German Ambassador in Beijing from 1987–1992)
  • Dr. Qian Yuejun, Engineer, Frankfurt am Main
    (Founding member of the independent “Organization of Chinese Students and Academics in Germany” (founded 1989), legal representative of Chinese students in Germany since 1989 and involvement in the human rights movement in China)
  • Prof. Dr. Roman Malek SVD, Sankt Augustin
    Director of the Institute Monumenta Serica
  • Dr. Gotthard Oblau, Pastor, Essen
    (active from 1985–1997 on behalf of the organization ”Amity Foundation” in Nanjing und Hongkong)

Moderator: Dr. Astrid Lipinsky

17h00 Premier of the film "Belief in China" 
(followed by an opportunity to discuss the film with its producers Monika Kovacsics and Stefan Degert).
