Am 8. August 2022 verstarb im Alter von 98 Jahren in Rom der slowakische Kurienkardinal Jozef Tomko, der in seiner Zeit als Präfekt der Kongregation für die Evangelisierung der Völker (Propaganda Fide) von 1985 bis 2001 für die katholische Kirche in China eine bedeutende Rolle spielte. Papst Franziskus nahm am 11. August an der Totenmesse für den verstorbenen Kardinal im Petersdom teil. Der Messe stand Kardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dekan des Kardinalskollegiums, vor. Kardinal Tomko war das älteste Mitglied des Kollegiums.
